Vero cells are a cell line derived from the kidneys of African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops). They were first isolated and developed in 1962 by Yasumura and Kawakita at Chiba University in Japan. A major advantage of Vero cells is that they do not produce interferon, which allows viruses to replicate more efficiently within the cells. This property is particularly beneficial for viral research, including studies of pathogenic viruses such as poliovirus, flaviviruses, and coronaviruses. They also facilitate the production of viral vaccines, such as oral polio vaccine and certain influenza vaccines.
Given their widespread use, it is critical to ensure the safety and efficacy of products derived from Vero cells. In this context, an important concern is the presence of residual host cell DNA in the final product. Regulatory requirements set by agencies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) emphasize the need to monitor and limit the amount and size of residual DNA to mitigate any potential risks, including carcinogenicity and infection. The Residual DNA Size Analysis Kit-Vero was developed to meet these critical needs. This kit provides a reliable and efficient method to quantify and analyze the size distribution of residual Vero cell DNA in biological products.
