Plant suspension culture is emerging as a promising alternative bioproduction platform for recombination proteins, which integrates the merits of whole plant production, microbial fermentation and mammalian cell culture. It offers a number of advantages over traditional expression system such as their intrinsic safety, cost-effective bioprocessing, and the capability for post-translation modifications. With the expression of the first complex recombinant protein (human serum albumin) in tobacco cell culture, a diverse array of pharmaceutical proteins including antibodies, vaccines, hormones, growth factors, cytokines and therapeutic enzymes have been produced in plants.
Tobacco BY-2 (Bright yellow-2) and NT-1 (Nicotiana tabacum-1) are the most frequently chosen plant cell lines used for recombinant protein expression, due to the robust and fast growth. Other commonly used cell lines include rice, alfalfa, tomato, soybean, and carrot.
In comparison to whole-plant cultivation, plant cell culture systems have several notable advantages including: 1) Rapid growth with cell doubling time as short as one day. 2) Controllable plant bioreactor. 3) Fewer regulatory and environmental compliance hurdles for ensuring product quality and safety. 4) Simple procedure for secreted protein isolation/purification from inexpensive.
