Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging hemorrhagic fever disease caused by the tick-borne bunyavirus SFTSV (Dabie bandavirus). The clinical manifestations of SFTS cases are non-specific, such as fever, fatigue, myalgia, gastrointestinal symptoms, etc., and are easily misdiagnosed as other febrile diseases.
SFTSV particles are 80-120 nm in diameter and possess large (L), medium (M), and small (S) negative-sense RNA genome segments. The L segment encodes 2084 amino acids of the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), which triggers the replication and transcription of viral RNA. The M segment encodes 1073 amino acids of the glycoproteins Gn and Gc precursors, responsible for the formation of viral particles and their attachment to target cells. Finally, the S segment encodes a nucleocapsid protein (N) and a nonstructural protein (NSs) via ambisense transcription.
