The kruppel like factor 4 (KLF4) mRNA encodes a protein that belongs to the Kruppel family of transcription factors. KLF4 protein is thought to regulate the expression of key transcription factors during embryonic development and play an important role in maintaining embryonic stem cells, and in preventing their differentiation. In addition it is also required for establishing the barrier function of the skin and for postnatal maturation and maintenance of the ocular surface.
