AAV3 Virus-Like Particles (Empty Capsids)

AAV3 refers to adeno-associated virus serotype 3 and is one of the various serotypes of adeno-associated virus (AAV). AAV is a small, non-enveloped virus with a single-stranded DNA genome known for its ability to infect both dividing and non-dividing cells. They are often used as vectors for gene therapy due to their safety profile and ability to achieve long-term gene expression without eliciting a significant immune response. AAV3 virus-like particles (VLPs) are specially designed empty capsids of the AAV3 serotype that do not contain any genomic material. These particles retain the structural and antigenic characteristics of native AAV3, making them a valuable tool for a variety of research and therapeutic purposes. AAV3 VLPs consist of the viral capsid proteins VP1, VP2, and VP3, which assemble into a 60-subunit icosahedral structure. This structure is identical to the complete AAV3 particle, only lacking the single-stranded DNA genome. The absence of genetic material within these capsids precludes the risk of off-target gene delivery or potential insertional mutagenesis, thereby increasing their safety.
