At the heart of this viral vector is the designer receptor HA-hM3D(Gq), a G protein-coupled receptor engineered to specifically respond to the otherwise pharmacologically inactive compound clozapine-N-oxide (CNO). This designer receptor specifically activated by designer drugs (DREADD) technology enables spatial and temporal control of neuronal activity via exogenous CNO, providing researchers with a valuable tool to interrogate the functional role of specific neuronal populations without the confounding effects of traditional pharmacological manipulations.
