Inactivated SARS-CoV-2 Variant Gamma, Lineage P1_2021 (NY-Wadsworth-21033899-01/2021)

SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the COVID-19 pandemic, is a highly mutable RNA virus belonging to the Coronaviridae family. Since its emergence in late 2019, the virus has undergone numerous genetic changes, resulting in numerous variants. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies these variants as variants of concern (VOC), variants of interest (VOI), and variants requiring monitoring (VUM), based on their transmissibility, severity, and potential for immune evasion. Among these, the gamma variant (P.1) has emerged as a significant VOC, raising global public health concerns due to its increased transmissibility and potential resistance to antibodies.

The gamma variant, first identified in travelers from Brazil to Japan in January 2021, is characterized by a series of mutations in the spike protein, including N501Y, E484K, and K417T. These mutations enhance the virus''s ability to bind to the human ACE2 receptor, thereby increasing its transmissibility. It is worth noting that the E484K mutation is associated with reduced antibody neutralization, which may weaken the effectiveness of vaccines and natural immunity to previous infections. Studies have shown that the Gamma virus strain is about 1.7-2.4 times more transmissible than earlier strains and may lead to higher reinfection rates.
