Influenza A virus (H1N1pdm) (NY/01/09), commonly referred to as the 2009 pandemic H1N1 strain, is a zoonotic virus derived from a complex reassortment of avian, swine, and human influenza viruses. The virus is primarily transmitted through droplets expelled through coughing or sneezing, but can also be transmitted through direct contact with contaminated surfaces. The virus is highly contagious due to its ability to bind to α-2,6-linked sialic acid receptors, which are abundantly expressed in the human upper respiratory tract. Once inside the body, the virus rapidly replicates in respiratory epithelial cells, triggering an inflammatory cascade that leads to symptoms such as fever, cough, and sore throat, and sometimes severe complications such as pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The H1N1pdm strain is known for its predisposition to infect younger individuals, a pattern that deviates from seasonal influenza. This may be due to immunity among older individuals from prior exposure to antigenically related strains.

Influenza A (H1N1pdm) (NY/01/09) has a typical orthomyxovirus structure, with a lipid envelope derived from host cells and studded with glycoprotein spikes—hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA)—that mediate viral entry and egress, respectively. The HA protein facilitates host cell binding, while the NA protein cleaves sialic acid residues, enabling viral progeny transmission. The viral genome consists of eight single-stranded, negative-sense RNA segments encoding 11 key proteins, including polymerase subunits (PB1, PB2, PA), nucleoprotein (NP), and matrix proteins (M1, M2). The 2009 pandemic strain inherited a unique combination of gene segments from the Eurasian swine (PB2, PA), classical swine (HA, NP, NS), and human H3N2 (PB1) lineages, making it antigenically novel and highly adaptable.
