Description
Pneumonia Virus of Mice (PVM), is an enveloped, single-stranded RNA virus of the family Paramyxoviridae, genus Pneumovirus. It is closely related to human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV). This virus is an engineered recombinant PVM expressing the green fluorescent protein (GFP). It can be used as an efficient tool for studying PVM. This virus should be handled in BSL2 facilities.

Customer Reviews

Mouse pneumonia virus (MPV) is a pathogen of great concern in the field of laboratory animal science, especially in studies involving mice. MPV belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family, which includes a variety of viruses known to cause respiratory diseases in mammals. This family is also the source of human respiratory diseases such as mumps and measles, making MPV a popular subject for comparative studies. The virus primarily affects the respiratory system, causing pneumonia and other related diseases. Infected mice may experience symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and difficulty breathing. However, the severity of symptoms can vary, and in some cases, infected mice may be asymptomatic, making the detection and management of the virus more challenging. Green fluorescent protein (GFP)-tagged mouse pneumonia virus represents a major breakthrough in virological research, especially in the study of the pathogenesis of pneumonia, immune responses, and potential therapeutic avenues. The GFP-tagged virus is genetically modified to express a fluorescent protein originally derived from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria. This modification allows researchers to visually track the progression of viral infection and reproduction within a host organism. GFP-tagged mouse pneumonia virus offers many advantages. First, it helps identify the initial infection site and monitor the spread of the virus in different organs and cell types. Second, it helps understand host-pathogen interactions by tracking how proteins within host cells respond to viral invasion. These insights can provide valuable information about the immune evasion strategies adopted by the virus and the subsequent immune response.

Customer Q&As
What is murine pneumonia virus?

A: Murine pneumonia virus, commonly referred to as "pneumonia virus of mice" (PVM), is an enveloped, single-stranded RNA virus of the family Paramyxoviridae, genus Pneumovirus.

What are the clinical signs of Pneumonia Virus of Mice?

A: Pneumonia Virus of Mice (PVM) causes silent infection in immunocompetent mice and is not highly transmissible because the infection spreads slowly in conventional colonies. Immunocompromised mice become persistently infected, develop progressive pneumonia, lose weight and develop dyspnea.

How to diagnose PVM infection?

A: Serological testing using MFI or IFA is the mainstay of diagnosis of infection. In immunodeficient mice, etiological diagnosis is accomplished by using PVM-specific PCR detection or viral isolation on BHK-21 cells.

What is the genome size of Pneumoviruse?

A: Pneumoviruses have genomes of approximately 15 kb that contain 10 genes encoding 11 or 12 proteins.
