| Description | Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is an enveloped, non-segmented, negative-stranded RNA virus which belongs to the genus Pneumovirus, within the family Paramyxoviridae. Bovine RSV is a major cause of respiratory disease in young calves. This virus is an engineered recombinant Bovine RSV strain expressing the green fluorescent protein (GFP). It can replicate as efficiently as its parental strain in host cells which allows researchers to use it as an efficient tool for studying Bovine RSV. This virus should be handled in BSL2 facilities. |

Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) is an important pathogen in the cattle industry, known to cause severe respiratory disease in dairy and beef cattle. A member of the Paramyxoviridae family and the Pneumovirus genus, BRSV shares similarities with human respiratory syncytial virus, a common cause of respiratory disease in children. BRSV primarily infects young calves, usually those under 6 months of age, but it can infect cattle of all ages. The virus is highly contagious and can be spread through aerosol droplets, direct contact, and indirectly through contaminated objects. Initial symptoms of infection can be mild and include coughing, runny nose, and mild fever. However, as the disease progresses, it can lead to more severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, wheezing, and increased respiratory rate.
GFP-tagged bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) is an innovative research tool for studying viral pathogenesis, host-virus interactions, and vaccine development. Incorporating GFP into the BRSV genome allows scientists to visually track the virus in living cells and tissues using fluorescence microscopy. This approach provides valuable insights into the viral life cycle, including entry, replication, and spread within host cells. When exposed to a specific wavelength of light, GFP emits bright green fluorescence, enabling detailed visualization of infected cells and facilitating quantitative analysis of viral replication.

A: Although adult animals may be clinically or subclinically infected, severe clinical signs are primarily seen in young calves, including upper and lower respiratory tract lesions. The main symptoms are fever, cough, loss of appetite, increased respiratory rate and nasal discharge.
