Adenoviruses are a common type of double-stranded DNA virus, widely found in humans and animals. Human adenovirus (HAdV) was first discovered and isolated from human adenoid tissue in 1953. HAdV targets a variety of organs, with common infection sites including the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, and conjunctiva. Rare manifestations include hepatitis, hemorrhagic cystitis, hemorrhagic colitis, nephritis, and meningitis. Based on their host and specific biological characteristics, adenoviruses can be classified into different genera and types. More than 100 types of HAdV have been identified, divided into seven subgenera, A through G. Different subgenera of HAdV exhibit different tissue tropisms: subgenera B and D primarily infect the conjunctiva, subgenera B, C, and E can cause respiratory infections, while subgenera F and G typically infect the gastrointestinal tract.

Adenoviruses can enter host cells through receptor binding and replicate in the cell nucleus, leading to cell death and an inflammatory response. After infection, patients may experience symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, red eyes, and diarrhea. While most human adenovirus infections are self-limiting, with symptoms typically resolving within days to a week, they can lead to serious complications in certain populations, particularly infants, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. Furthermore, human adenoviruses are highly contagious and can easily cause localized outbreaks in densely populated areas.
