Wild-Type Human Adenovirus (Serotype 8)

Human adenoviruses are important pathogens causing acute respiratory infections, possessing strong environmental survival and transmission capabilities. In crowded environments with poor sanitation, human adenoviruses can cause outbreaks. Human adenoviruses include 7 subgenera (A-G) and at least 116 serotypes. Due to the large number of serotypes and differing tissue tropism, they cause various diseases affecting different tissues and organs, mainly including acute respiratory infections, conjunctivitis, and gastrointestinal diseases.

(1) Respiratory infection symptoms: Acute respiratory infection is the most common manifestation, causing common cold and influenza-like symptoms. Typical clinical manifestations include cough, sore throat, and fever; in severe cases, pneumonia and even death may occur. Serotypes 3 and 7 of subgenus B are the main serotypes causing acute respiratory infections, and serotype 55 is the main serotype causing community-acquired pneumonia in adults; acute respiratory infections caused by serotypes 1 and 2 of subgenus C and serotype 4 of subgenus E are also relatively common.

(2) Ocular infection symptoms: This is also one of the common symptoms of human adenovirus infection, which can cause various eye diseases such as epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis, and pharyngoconjunctival fever. It can also cause outbreaks of eye infections in crowded places such as schools, and can also cause "swimming pool fever" (i.e., pharyngoconjunctival fever, with symptoms including persistent high fever, pharyngitis, and acute follicular conjunctivitis). Serotypes 3 and 7 of subgenus B and serotypes 8, 19, and 64 of subgenus D are the main serotypes causing these infections.

(3) Gastrointestinal symptoms: Many human adenovirus serotypes can replicate in the gastrointestinal tract of infected individuals and be excreted in the feces, but only a few serotypes cause gastroenteritis. Infected individuals experience symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea. Human adenovirus serotype 41 of subgenus F is the main serotype causing gastrointestinal infection symptoms.
