oaz1a

Official Full Name
ornithine decarboxylase antizyme 1a
Organism
Danio rerio
Gene ID
259192
Background
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the ornithine decarboxylase antizyme family, which plays a role in cell growth and proliferation by regulating intracellular polyamine levels. Expression of antizymes requires +1 ribosomal frameshifting, which is enhanced by high levels of polyamine in cells. Antizymes in turn bind to and inhibit ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), the key enzyme in polyamine biosynthesis; thus, completing the auto-regulatory circuit. Several antizyme paralogs have been described in zebrafish. The mRNA for this antizyme is ubiquitously expressed in the embryo and differentially expressed during development from embryo to adult fish. This antizyme shares features in common with mammalian antizyme 1: it negatively regulates intracellular polyamine levels by inhibiting ODC activity and accelerating ODC degradation in vitro; like mammalian antizyme 1 mRNA, this antizyme mRNA contains two potential in-frame translation initiation sites.
