Galectin-3 is a galactose-specific lectin which binds IgE. This lectin may mediate with the alpha-3, beta-1 integrin for the stimulation by CSPG4 of endothelial cells migration. Found together with DMBT1, which is required for terminal differentiation of columnar epithelial cells during early embryogenesis. In the nucleus, it acts as a pre-mRNA splicing factor. Galectin-3 is involved in acute inflammatory responses including neutrophil activation and adhesion, chemoattraction of monocytes macrophages, opsonization of apoptotic neutrophils, and activation of mast cells. It probably forms homo- or heterodimers. Additionally, galectin-3 interacts with DMBT1. This lectin forms a complex with ITGA3, ITGB1 and CSPG4. It also interacts with LGALS3BP, LYPD3, CYHR1 and UACA. It is highly expressed in the colonic epithelium and abundant in activated macrophages.
